KAIST RECEPTION HALL

    KAIST has grown beyond a leading research institution into a platform for global exchange. While the campus clearly represents science and technology, it has lacked a space that conveys a distinctly Korean sensibility. This project proposes a Hanok that brings together traditional spatial language and contemporary construction, creating a setting where KAIST’s global identity and Korean character can coexist.

    The design focuses on the nugak, a traditional structure used for gatherings. Its multi-level configuration allows the guesthouse and café to operate independently while forming a clear architectural presence. The upper level is planned as a guesthouse connected directly to the main building, accommodating meetings, receptions, and formal programs. The ground level is opened as a transparent café, forming a public threshold that engages the campus. The connecting corridor is reduced to its essential elements, allowing the relationship between the buildings to remain clear without becoming visually dominant.

    The building is organized in a T-shaped plan, with primary spaces oriented south and service areas aligned with the campus axis. The numaru and anbang are placed at opposite ends, creating distinct spatial conditions according to orientation. This arrangement forms two courtyards: a front court for reception and events, and a more private rear garden. A reflecting pond in the front establishes a ceremonial approach across water, while the existing pine grove is incorporated to add depth to the landscape. The rear garden draws from traditional elements, allowing the outdoor spaces to function as part of everyday exchange within the campus.

KAIST는 과학기술을 선도하는 연구기관을 넘어, 다양한 국제적 주체들이 교류하는 플랫폼으로 자리 잡았다. 그러나 캠퍼스는 이러한 성격을 충분히 보여주는 한국적 공간을 갖추지 못했다. 본 프로젝트는 전통 한옥의 공간 언어를 바탕으로 현대의 기술과 구축 방식을 결합하여, KAIST의 국제성과 한국성이 함께 드러나는 장소를 제안한다.

    설계는 전통 연회시설인 누각에 주목한다. 중층 구조를 통해 영빈관과 카페를 분리 운영하면서도 하나의 명확한 형상을 형성하며, 상부는 본관과 직접 연결된 영빈 공간으로 계획되어 접견과 연회 등 다양한 프로그램을 수용한다. 하부는 투명한 커튼월로 열린 카페로 구성되어 캠퍼스와 자연스럽게 맞닿는 공공적 공간이 된다. 본관과 한옥을 잇는 복도각은 최소한의 요소로 계획되어, 연결은 드러나되 형식은 과도하게 강조되지 않도록 조율하였다.

    건물은 남향으로 주요 공간을 두고, 캠퍼스 축에 대응하는 서비스 공간을 배치한 丁자형 평면으로 구성된다. 남측 누마루와 북측 안방은 서로 다른 방향성과 성격을 형성하며, 이를 통해 전면의 행사마당과 후면의 후원마당이 자연스럽게 만들어진다. 전면에는 연지를 두어 물을 건너 진입하는 상징적 동선을 구성하고, 기존 소나무 군락을 끌어들여 풍경의 깊이를 더했다. 후원은 마사토 마당과 화계를 통해 한옥과의 조화를 이루며, 외부 공간 역시 국제 교류가 일상적으로 이루어지는 하나의 장으로 작동하도록 계획하였다.
