Friend’s House

    At the top of a hill in Buam-dong, a friend commissioned a house that also serves as a art studio. Despite the allowable floor area ratio, the project is intentionally limited in scale, conceived as a minimal structure with the possibility of future expansion. The approach prioritizes clarity and simplicity in structure, allowing for disassembly and reconfiguration if needed. Decorative elements are reduced, leaving only what is essential.

    Tproject begins from a personal memory. In a industrial loft in New York once shared with friends, a temporary structure was built using wood studs to accommodate both living and working. An attempt to construct with the minimum number of columns soon required reinforcement, and the inevitably added columns came to be called “destiny columns.” This project revisits that memory within a more defined structural system. While the structure is organized using members of similar dimensions, additional columns remain where structural and spatial demands intersect, continuing to operate as “destiny columns.”.he

    Rather than exposing the structure as in conventional wood structure, the gaps between structures are filled with insulation and secondary framing is omitted, reducing unnecessary elements. Slender columns support and lift the roof, drawing natural light deep into the interior. This allows enclosed walls to coexist with a soft, even distribution of light throughout the space.

    The plan is organized around a central axis, separating the workspace to the north and the living area to the south. While following a simple order, the interplay of structure, light, and program introduces slight deviations, preventing the two zones from becoming identical repetitions.

    This small project reflects broader conditions of contemporary architecture. While architecture has long been understood in terms of permanence, it often operates through cycles of renewal. Even major renovations frequently reconstruct everything except the primary structure, producing results not unlike new construction, regardless of classification.

    Within this context, the question shifts from how long something lasts to how it can change. Separating the structural frame from replaceable elements, adopting dry construction methods, and considering detachable joints and reusable materials offer one possible response. The project explores this possibility, positioning architecture as an open system between a minimal structure and a variable configuration.
 
부암동 언덕 꼭대기에 위치한 대지에, 친구로부터 집이자 작업 공간을 의뢰받았다. 이 대지는 법적 용적률에 비해 제한적으로 계획되었으며, 향후 확장을 전제로 당장은 최소한의 규모로 구성되었다. 이에 따라 구조적으로 명확하고 단순하며, 필요할 경우 해체와 재구성이 가능한 방식을 택하고자 했다. 장식적 요소를 덜어내고, 꼭 필요한 요소로만 이루어진 소박한 공간을 지향한다.

    이 건축은 개인적인 경험에서 출발한다. 과거 뉴욕에서 친구들과 거주하던 공장형 아파트 내부에, 목재 각재로 임시 구조를 세워 생활과 작업을 병행하던 공간이 있었다. 최소한의 기둥으로 구조를 구성하려 했던 시도는 곧 보강으로 이어졌고, 그 과정에서 불가피하게 추가된 기둥들을 ‘데스티니 기둥’이라 불렀다. 이번 작업은 그 기억을 보다 명확한 구조 체계 안에서 다시 구성한 것으로, 비슷한 규격의 각재를 기반으로 구조를 정리하되 구조와 공간의 요구가 만나는 지점에서는 여전히 추가된 기둥이 남아 또 하나의 ‘데스티니 기둥’으로 작동한다.

    일반적인 중목구조가 구조를 드러내는 방식과 달리, 이 건축은 구조 사이를 단열재로 채우고 별도의 하지를 생략하여 불필요한 요소를 덜어냈다. 대신 얇은 기둥으로 지붕을 지지하고 이를 들어 올려 자연광을 깊게 끌어들인다. 그 결과 벽체를 확보하면서도 내부 전반에 균일한 빛이 스며드는 환경이 형성된다.

    공간은 중앙을 기준으로 북측의 작업 공간과 남측의 주거 영역으로 나뉜다. 단순한 질서를 따르면서도 구조와 빛, 프로그램의 조건이 더해지며 두 영역은 완전히 동일하게 반복되지 않고 미세한 어긋남을 유지한다.

    이 작은 건축은 최근 우리가 마주하는 건축의 조건과도 맞닿아 있다. 건축이 오랫동안 영구성을 전제로 논의되어 왔다면, 실제의 건축은 일정한 주기를 거쳐 갱신되는 대상으로 작동한다. 대수선 또한 구조체를 제외한 대부분을 다시 구축하는 방식으로 전개되며 제도적 분류와는 달리 신축과 유사한 결과에 이르기도 한다.

    이러한 조건 속에서 중요한 것은 얼마나 오래 남는가보다, 어떻게 변화할 수 있는가에 가깝다. 구조와 교체 가능한 요소를 분리하고, 건식화된 공법과 분리 가능한 접합, 재사용 가능한 재료의 흐름을 고려하는 방식은 그에 대한 하나의 대응이 된다. 이 건축은 최소한의 구조와 가변적인 구성 사이에서 변화에 열려 있는 건축의 가능성을 탐색한 결과이다.
