     The client wanted a house that would sit in harmony with the land, a single home that could feel like two when different generations came to stay, allowing each to stay independently.

    Before starting the design, we camped on the site for a full day to experience the land directly. What stood out was not the distant sea or the view of Sanbang Mountain, but the small hill in front of the site and the quiet traces of nature around it. Most of all, the sky, constantly changing through the day, created the most beautiful scenery. Jeju is often remembered for its grand landscapes, but here the intention was to follow the quieter breath of nature rather than to frame overwhelming views.

    If Jeju is usually experienced like a full orchestra of nature, this house was designed to capture the sense of listening to a solo instrument within it. The basic elements of architecture, the walls and the roof, frame portions of the landscape and guide the gaze toward a blade of grass, a shifting sky, the low hill, or the distant outline of Sanbang Mountain and the sea.

    Inside, the spaces were kept open with as few walls as possible to create a sense of width and flexibility. Specific rooms were defined instead through subtle changes in floor level or concealed sliding doors, allowing spaces to be separated or connected without enclosing them.

    The layout was approached through verbs such as resting, eating, sleeping, and bathing so that the house could be organized directly around the way it is used. The building was placed to minimize disturbance to the terrain, while landscaping was planned to highlight the natural contours of the land.

건축주는 이 집이 대지의 지형과 조화를 이루기를 바랐고, 두 세대가 방문했을 때에도 각자의 독립된 생활이 가능하도록 ‘두 채의 집 같은 한 채의 집’을 원했다.

  설계 작업 전 현장에서 하룻동안 캠핑을 하며 대지를 체감한 결과, 이 대지의 매력은 근처의 바다와 멀리 보이는 산방산 보다 현장 바로 앞 작은 언덕과 그 주변의 소소한 자연인 것을 알게 되었고 무엇보다 시간에 따라 변하는 하늘과 어울어지는 풍경이 아름다웠다. 제주는 흔히 장대한 풍경으로 기억되지만, 이 집에서는 그런 압도적인 장면보다 오히려 조용히 스며드는 자연의 숨결을 따라가고자 했다.

  제주는 흔히 자연이라는 오케스트라를 온몸으로 즐기는 곳이지만, 이 집에서는 그 안의 작은 악기 하나하나에 집중하는 독주를 듣는 감각을 건축적으로 구현하고자 했다. 벽과 지붕이라는 건축의 기본 요소를 통해 자연의 일부를 프레임 짓고, 시선을 유도하여 풀 한 포기, 흐르는 하늘, 낮은 동산, 멀리 보이는 산방산과 바다까지 각각의 요소에 집중할 수 있도록 했다.

  실내 공간은 벽을 최소화해 전체적으로 넓고 유연한 느낌을 주도록 구성했으며, 구체적인 공간의 구획은 바닥의 단차나 숨겨진 미닫이문을 통해 조절할 수 있도록 했다. 이렇게 함으로써 닫힌 공간 없이도 기능에 따라 실들이 나뉘고 연결되도록 했다.

​  또한 내부 기능 구성을 쉬다, 먹다, 자다, 씻다 등의 동사로 접근하여 건축주가 사용하고자 하는 기능에 보다 적합하게 구성하였고, 외부 대지 지형 손상을 최소화하도록 건물을​ 배치하고 지형을 돋보일 수 있도록 조경 작업을 하였다.
